When we create a paved surface using chip seal, we use the same materials used for an asphalt surface. The primary difference is the method we use to put them all together. First, we apply a thin layer of hot asphalt to the area being paved. Then, we spread the “chips” or small aggregates over the top of the hot asphalt.

Then we use specialized equipment to compress and compact the chips and asphalt. This ensures maximum adherence of the two substances. Finally, excess stone is cleared from the paved surface. The rock pieces are visible in the final product. This rougher surface is what provides extra traction for vehicles.
